Cryosurgery is a technique in which abnormal tissue is destroyed through freezing. Special instrumentation chilled by liquid nitrogen is employed. Veterinarians use cryosurgery primarily to treat several types of eyelid problems in dogs. Misdirected eyelashes growing towards the eye can cause pain or even corneal ulceration. Freezing the hair at its root usually ensures that it will not grow back. Nodules on the eyelid of older dogs are most commonly tumors of the meibomian gland. These tumors are very sensitive to freezing. Cryosurgery, in most cases, allows these masses to be completely destroyed with minimal loss of surrounding healthy tissue. |
