Flexible endoscopy utilizes fiber optics to allow a
veterinarian to see inside the digestive tract and
respiratory bronchial system. Using special
forceps, samples may be taken from the lining of
the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. The
samples may be sent to a lab to look for evidence
of infection, inflammation or cancer. If infection is
suspected, a second sample may be submitted
for culture and sensitivity. This allows the best
antibiotic to be selected.

Sampson Bagley suffered from ileus, a condition
in which all movement of the digestive tract shuts
down. Ileus is often fatal. Thanks to biopsies
obtained during an endoscopic exam, Sampson
was diagnosed with severe inflammatory bowel
syndrome. Appropriate treatment was instituted
which probably saved his life.
